Master Plan and Feasibility Study

A Feasibility Study and Master Plan for Facilities Improvements for the School of Architecture was developed outlining a ten-year development program for restoration, renovations and additions to four historic buildings near the heart of the University campus. Work included evaluating existing and future spatial requirements, circulation patterns, developing architectural guidelines for future additions and renovations, establishing budgets and phasing possibilities.

The Master Plan also programmed the relocation of functions, capturing lost space in attics and basements without compromising the historic buildings and provided for sensitive and unobtrusive additions to existing buildings.

Sutton Hall, Renovation for Studios, Classrooms and Offices

Sutton Hall became the first phase of the Master Plan for the School of Architecture to be completed. The exterior envelope of the historic building was carefully restored and updated while the interior was completely renovated on several levels at a cost of $3,500,000. Previously unused attic areas were converted into studio spaces with natural lighting from a clerestory window.

Goldsmith Hall, Additions and Renovation for Studios and Offices

Goldsmith Hall was originally designed by Paul Cret as one of the pair of gateway buildings on the West Mall of the university campus. To accommodate the needs of the School of Architecture, a new wing of approximately 33,000 square feet was designed in conjunction with major restoration and renovations of the existing building. The addition was designed to blend sensitively and almost seamlessly with Cret's original building. The $9,000,000 construction cost included renovation of all studios, offices, classrooms and administrative areas and completely updating all mechanical, electrical and life safety systems.

Architectural services were provided by Thomas & Booziotis Architects (Predecessor to Booziotis & Company Architects)/Chartier Newton in a joint venture.
